Terms of Use

Last updated: April 5, 2026

OpenBinary is an independent security research project that provides automated static analysis of macOS binaries for security research, interoperability, and educational purposes. By accessing or using openbinary.org (the "Service"), you agree to these terms.

1. Nature of the Service

The Service performs automated security research and interoperability analysis of publicly available macOS software. It displays metadata, behavioral analysis, capability reports, decompiled pseudocode, and generated source code reconstructions derived from binary analysis. The Service does not redistribute original binaries.

This is an experimental research project. It is not a commercial product and is provided without any guarantee of availability, accuracy, or continuity.

2. Uploads

When you upload a binary to the Service, you represent that you have the legal right to submit it for analysis. By uploading, you grant the OpenBinary Project a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, analyze, index, and publicly display all analysis output derived from the binary — including metadata, capabilities, decompiled pseudocode, and generated source code reconstructions.

You retain all rights to the original binary. We do not claim ownership of uploaded content. We do not offer downloads of uploaded binaries.

3. Analysis Output

The Service produces several types of output from binary analysis:

Publicly available:

  • Metadata — binary name, size, hash, platform, architecture, source
  • Behavioral analysis — capabilities, frameworks, entitlements, imports, exports, network surface, interesting strings
  • DNA fingerprint — numerical similarity vectors and feature hashes

Available to authenticated users or paid tiers:

  • Decompiled pseudocode — human-readable representation of machine code logic
  • Source code reconstruction — generated Rust source code that approximates the binary's structure and behavior, available as a downloadable package

Access to certain analysis output may require authentication, a paid subscription, or agreement to additional terms. We may change what is included in free and paid tiers at any time.

All output is generated by automated tools and provided as-is with no warranty of accuracy, completeness, or fitness for any purpose. Do not rely on analysis output as legal, security, or compliance advice.

None of the above represents the original source code of the analyzed binary. Decompiled pseudocode and source code reconstructions are mechanical transformations of machine code into different representations. They are produced for security research and interoperability analysis under applicable fair use and reverse engineering exemptions.

4. Indexed Content

The Service indexes and analyzes publicly available macOS binaries from sources including package managers, system paths, and public repositories. This analysis is performed for security research and interoperability purposes under 17 U.S.C. § 1201(f) and (j), and applicable fair use doctrine.

If you are a rights holder and believe your software has been indexed in error, see our DMCA Policy for removal procedures.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Upload binaries you do not have the right to submit for analysis
  • Use the Service to distribute malware or facilitate software piracy
  • Scrape, mirror, or bulk-download analysis results without permission
  • Attempt to extract or reconstruct original binaries from analysis data
  • Interfere with the operation of the Service

6. Your Responsibility

All analysis output — including decompiled pseudocode, source code reconstructions, and behavioral reports — is provided for informational and research purposes only. You are solely responsible for how you use them. If you copy, adapt, distribute, or rely on any analysis output, you do so at your own risk and must independently evaluate whether your use complies with applicable laws, licenses, and third-party rights.

The Service does not grant you any rights to the underlying software that was analyzed. Analysis output may reflect copyrighted material belonging to the original software author. Downloading or using source code reconstructions does not constitute a license from the rights holder. The OpenBinary Project makes no representation that your use of analysis output is authorized by the rights holder.

Laws regarding reverse engineering, decompilation, and software analysis vary by jurisdiction. You are responsible for ensuring your use of the Service and its output complies with the laws applicable to you.

7. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. THE OPENBINARY PROJECT DOES NOT WARRANT THAT ANALYSIS RESULTS ARE ACCURATE, COMPLETE, OR CURRENT.

8. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE OPENBINARY PROJECT AND ITS CONTRIBUTORS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS OR REVENUES, WHETHER INCURRED DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.

9. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the OpenBinary Project and its contributors from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of the Service or your violation of these terms, including any intellectual property claims related to binaries you upload.

10. Changes

We may update these terms at any time. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance. Material changes will be noted by updating the "Last updated" date.
